Samsung Electronics’ next-generation AutoSSD won an award for innovation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 Innovation Awards. Samsung Electronics’ award-winning product, 1TB NVMeTM BGA AutoSSD AM991, is a memory solution that supports an optimized in-vehicle user experience, built to meet an era of autonomous driving that is seeing increasingly accelerated technological advancement. The Rapid Rise of Automotive Memory Given the current rate of technological advancement, the automotive memory field is expected to grow remarkably in the coming years. Existing PC, mobile and server functions have been gradually implemented into vehicle systems and the demand for high-capacity and high-performance memory continues to rise dramatically. This is thanks in no small part to the advancement of autonomous driving systems and the sophistication of in-vehicle infotainment. Indeed, the automotive memory market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 20%, from 4.3billion USD in 2021 to 12.5billion USD in 2027.1 Considering the expected growth rate of the entire memory market in the same period (8%), the automotive memory market is clearly headed for an especially rapid evolution. 1 Yole Intelligence, Memory for automotive: A fast-growing and robust market, November 30 2022 One particular area of note is infotainment. As the commercialization of self-driving vehicles has accelerated – due to the development of autonomous driving technologies – the importance of enhanced in-vehicle infotainment, like in-vehicle data management functions, movies, music and high-end games, has risen in tandem. According to the levels of driving automation as defined by SAE International in the U.S, automated driving is possible from Level 3 and higher. From Level 3 and up, in order to prevent accidents from occurring, the role of DSSAD2 – a data storage system for automated driving – thus becomes crucial. 2 DSSAD: Data Storage System for Automated Driving DSSAD performs data logging that stores important content necessary for determining the cause of an accident and where responsibility lies. DSSAD data logging includes the turning on or off of the autonomous driving system itself, requesting changes to the way the vehicle is driven, the detection of collision risk, the timing of recorded driving information and the degree to which a vehicle or system has broken down.
[Levels of Driving Automation and Their Definitions]
Levels of Driving Automation Definition Responsibility
Level 0 No Driving Automation Manual vehicle (Hands On) Driver
Level 1 Driver Assistance System functions that support driving are available (Hands on)
Level 2 Partial Driving Automation Operation of driving assistance functions under driver’s monitoring (Hands Off)
Level 3 Conditional Driving Automation Driver’s intervention is needed in case of danger and emergency (Eyes Off) System
Level 4 High Driving Automation Driver’s intervention is not needed, complete autonomous driving level (Mind Off)
Level 5 Full Driving Automation No driver needed, Driverless car (Driver Off)
Infotainment and the Future of the Driving Experience Beyond this, the electric vehicle industry has recently ventured into supporting high-end games – 3D games and existing games for PCs, consoles and mobile devices – as another form of in-vehicle infotainment. For now, this feature will provide drivers with a wider selection of things to do while charging their vehicles, with even more expected to be available at Level 5 (Full Driving Automation). Given the huge potential of infotainment capabilities in these contexts, the demand for high-capacity, high-performance memory is expected to grow exponentially. Samsung Electronics’ optimal solution for fulfilling such potential is its AM991 technology, which is designed to meet the needs of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving (AD) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) alike. The award-winning AM991 provides a maximum memory capacity of 1TB. Furthermore, it supports industry-leading sequential read speeds of up to 2,300MB/s, and ensures fast and stable performance with sustainable sequential write speeds of up to 1,150MB/s, based on the PCIe 3.0 interface. Furthermore, AM991 has obtained a Grade 2 certification from AEC-Q1003, and guarantees stable performance between a wide temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. 3 AEC-Q100 (Automotive Electronic Council): International reliability test and quality standards issued by the Automotive Electronic Council for regulating the reliability evaluation procedure for electronic parts, such as semiconductors, in automobiles. Samsung’s Journey in Mobility Innovation Samsung Electronics aims to lead future mobility innovations by utilizing its rich experience with memory products in both mobile and server markets, acquired over 30 years of successful operations, and will maintain its strong leadership in the global market. In addition to AutoSSD, Samsung Electronics has an established and growing memory portfolio designed to support future automotive applications such as automotive LPDDR 5X, UFS, GDDR6 and more. It will also maintain a keen focus on strengthening stability and security functions like mobility-related functional safety and cyber security. “With the recent rapid growth in the electric vehicles field, both the performance and the capacity of storage required by infotainment systems and autonomous driving systems have been increasing too,” said Yongcheol Bae, Executive Vice President and Head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics. “We will take the lead in pioneering innovation in the automotive semiconductor market through Terabyte (TB)-class SSD solutions, based on Samsung Electronics’ extensive technological expertise in mobile and server storage.” While unseen to the driver, Samsung Electronics’ AutoSSD will power future driving experiences for customers. It is equipped with the industry’s top speed, bandwidth and reliability, and is an ideal choice for fully realizing tomorrow’s autonomous driving technologies. All that said, the Auto SSD is only one of many innovations in Samsung’s mobility journey and there are many more to come.
