Samsung To Take Major Step in Revolutionizing the Road Ahead at IAA MOBILITY 2023

Samsung Semiconductor has announced that it is participating in the upcoming IAA MOBILITY 2023 for the first time in its history. The event — held in Munich, Germany — is one of the largest transportation and mobility events in the world. As a first-time participant, Samsung will demonstrate its automotive semiconductor solutions for future mobility. Revolutionizing the Road Ahead The automotive industry is undergoing drastic changes. Technological innovations such as in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), telematics and autonomous driving (AD) are playing a more central role in the landscape. To meet the demand for these functions in vehicles, the market requires high performance semiconductor products. Products must be designed for enhanced computing power, data processing, sensing capabilities and improved connectivity. As a leader in the semiconductor industry, Samsung is committed to creating a safer, more sustainable and more connected mobility experience for its customers and communities through its efforts and commitment to future mobility. The company plans to revolutionize the automotive industry not just by offering reliable technological solutions, but also by fostering collaboration. Samsung describes this commitment as ‘Revolutionizing the Road Ahead,’ and plans to enact this vision both now and as it embarks on a journey with partners to achieve success in future mobility.
Setting the Table for Partnership As part of its vision for mobility, Samsung recognizes the importance of working together with industry stakeholders. For instance, Samsung’s Memory business already works with more than 60 automotive customers. Additionally, its memory solutions can be validated with diverse systems-on-a-chip (SoCs), meaning customers can tailor systems and platforms according to their needs. Samsung’s Foundry business has built its Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFE™), which enables partnership among diverse fields for automotive semiconductor innovation. These include Intellectual Property (IP), Electronic Design Automation (EDA), Design Service, Cloud and Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT). As for Samsung’s System LSI business, it cooperates with Tier 1 automotive suppliers to develop their reference platforms with Samsung’s automotive processors and IPs for features such as gesture recognition, vision processing, Hi-Fi audio, PC-level graphics and multi-displays. Cooperating with automotive suppliers to develop these features enables manufacturers to design vehicles much more easily. Samsung also engages in software and hardware cooperation with diverse partners in the sensor industry to ensure a safe driving experience. As the company revolutionizes the road ahead, these partnerships will prove to be crucial. Building Out Reliable Automotive Solutions An industry evolving as rapidly as automotive mobility requires industry players to be credible. As one of these key players, Samsung is committed to establishing itself as a dependable player in the eyes of its customers, collaborative partners and stakeholders. Samsung’s memory solutions are verified by ISO 26262 automotive quality certification, which is an international standard for functional safety of electrical and/or electronic systems that are installed in road vehicles. The memory solutions have also been verified by AEC-Q100, a set of qualification test sequences for integrated circuits developed by the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC). Samsung offers next-generation automotive SoCs for the diverse needs of the automotive industry — including ASIL*-B compliance — and is able to do so because it has a decade of experience with SoC development. Samsung also has a track record of providing its automotive SoCs for major manufacturers’ next-generation IVI and telematics systems. 
 * ASIL refers to Automotive Safety Integrity Level which is defined by the ISO 26262 standard. To meet the needs of customers in the automotive industry, Samsung has refined its advanced pixel technology, which allows customers to design new camera and sensing systems based on Samsung’s reliability and high level of expertise. Furthermore, the company is dedicated to its role as a trusted partner and is taking on that role by building out an ecosystem in which its partners can thrive as mobility innovators. For instance, Samsung’s Foundry business is securing automotive grades for reliability, which will allow partners to move forward knowing that Samsung’s products can be depended on. Investing in Consistent Manufacturing At IAA MOBILITY, Samsung plans to demonstrate the strength of its commitment to its plans to revolutionize the automotive industry. With Samsung’s dedicated organization and full-and-long term product roadmap — as well as its lineup for the automotive industry — automotive customers can expect stable product offerings and technical support with long-term partnerships. Samsung has an organization dedicated to automotive memory and it offers a mid-to-long-term roadmap for diverse applications and systems such as central gateway, IVI, telematics, ADAS and AD. Particularly in the sensor business, Samsung will meet the ever-changing needs of customers by expanding its product lineup from surround view monitor (SVM) and ADAS to an in-cabin system. Samsung is also proactively investing in its advanced manufacturing to secure production capacities that are unaffected by external market conditions. Doing so allows the company to build and maintain customer confidence. Blazing the Trail With Next-Generation Technology At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung is showcasing innovations that will help it reshape the automotive industry. Here are the key products Samsung will place front and center at the event:

1. Memory

The central gateway is the nerve center that orchestrates the many functions of future vehicles. As such, it serves as the communications hub, so high bandwidth memory is essential, in order to exchange data between all vehicle domains. IVI enables drivers and passengers to access a wide array of information and entertainment. Especially, advanced IVI systems require AI capabilities to empower drivers to use natural language to interact with the system. Therefore, Samsung Electronics is planning to provide high-performing memory solutions for such systems. At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung will showcase a wide range of its product portfolio for diverse applications such as the LPDDR5X for central gateways, the GDDR7 for Infotainment, the eMMC for Telematics and the Detachable Auto SSD for ADAS & Self-Driving.

2. Processor

Within the automotive industry, there is a growing need for powerful next-generation IVI SoCs that can play movies and run various applications or games on multiple displays in the vehicle. At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung will showcase the Exynos Auto V920, which features a powerful GPU for rich visual experiences, an NPU for AI capability, embedded DSP for premium audio, and a safety island for enforced safety. The Exynos Auto V920 will herald a new generation of infotainment systems that elevate entertainment and enhance safety when driving.

3. Sensor

Automotive vision requires the following advancements in camera technology:

High Dynamic Range (HDR) of up to 120dB and above in order to accurately detect vehicles and objects in harsh lighting environments

LED flicker mitigation (LFM) of headlights, traffic signals and road signs for a clearer view of the road and surroundings

Reduced motion artifacts to enable accurate sensing of objects or signs, even when driving at high speeds

Next generation ISOCELL Auto image sensors address these needs and propel the automotive industry forward. The ISOCELL Auto sensor features CornerPixel™, a unique pixel structure with two photodiodes — one big and one small — designed specifically for automotive purposes. CornerPixel™ allows the ISOCELL Auto sensor to provide a clearer view of the road ahead through enhanced HDR capabilities with LFM and less motion blur. At IAA MOBILITY, the company will showcase the ISOCELL Auto 1H1, which offers improved HDR capability for precise sensing and image sensors for advanced in-cabin cameras. 

4. Foundry

Samsung’s Foundry business is playing a major role in the transformation of the automotive industry with its high-performance platform solutions, from process technology to automotive design infrastructure and package solutions. With advanced process technology and a highly customized and optimized foundry ecosystem, Samsung enables partners’ innovation for mobility with transformative solutions that apply to ADAS, IVI and AD. At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung will showcase its automotive process technology roadmap from 14nm to 2nm, its IP and design infrastructure readiness and its design methodology.

5. LED

Samsung LED automotive lighting solutions range from high-quality LED chips to system modules providing established products and seamless services with the following differentiations:

The PixCell LED, which delivers ultimate precision for intelligent headlamps, is a new Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) lighting solution that empowers car manufacturers to create smaller lamps with precise and selective lighting control.

The next-generation Micro LED technology, which is evolved from PixCell LED, is ideally suited for ultra-high-resolution head-up displays (HUDs) while enabling driver information viewing through augmented reality (AR) glasses.

At IAA MOBILITY 2023, Samsung will showcase its diverse solutions including the PixCell LED, Micro LED and Mini LED. Well-Positioned for an Evolving Landscape Automotive mobility is rapidly evolving.
