From the moment you wake up and check your phone to watch videos right before bed, everything you do needs chips — and to make these chips, you need energy.

What kind of energy? Instead of fossil fuels or nuclear power, Samsung uses renewable energy when making our chips. Renewable energy is energy that can be used over and over without creating pollution, like sunlight and wind. Our focus on renewable energy sources helps protect the planet and keeps our future looking bright.

In June 2018, we had announced our goal to use 100% renewable energy for all sites in the U.S. and China by 2020.
But we achieved our goal a year ahead of schedule, replacing all electricity with renewable energy by 2019.

Greenhouse gas reduction due to the expansion of renewable energy (million tons)

The reason for expanding renewable energy use is to reduce greenhouse gases, and we believe that addressing and reducing carbon emissions — and consequently greenhouse gases — needs to be a top priority for all leading global companies.

Think about it, 5.68 million tons. That is the amount of greenhouse gases we reduced in 2020 alone, a 16% reduction compared to 2019. And that is all thanks to our installation of solar power plants in Giheung and our other greenhouse gas reduction projects. Now imagine if all companies did the same.

Progress like this is why we do our best to expand and encourage the use of eco-friendly energy, from renewable energy facilities to reducing energy use, and help protect our planet.
