100% renewable
energy
at our global sites
From the moment you wake up and check your phone to watch videos right before bed, everything you do needs chips — and to make these chips, you need energy.
What kind of energy? Instead of fossil fuels or nuclear power, Samsung uses renewable energy when making our chips. Renewable energy is energy that can be used over and over without creating pollution, like sunlight and wind. Our focus on renewable energy sources helps protect the planet and keeps our future looking bright.
In June 2018, we had announced our goal to use 100% renewable energy for all sites in the U.S. and China by 2020.
But we achieved our goal a year ahead of schedule, replacing all electricity with renewable energy by 2019.

The reason for expanding renewable energy use is to reduce greenhouse gases, and we believe that addressing and reducing carbon emissions — and consequently greenhouse gases — needs to be a top priority for all leading global companies.
Think about it, 5.68 million tons. That is the amount of greenhouse gases we reduced in 2020 alone, a 16% reduction compared to 2019. And that is all thanks to our installation of solar power plants in Giheung and our other greenhouse gas reduction projects. Now imagine if all companies did the same.
Progress like this is why we do our best to expand and encourage the use of eco-friendly energy, from renewable energy facilities to reducing energy use, and help protect our planet.
Samsung’s DS Division is implemented extensive renewable energy facilities at each site in Korea,
installing solar power plants in parking lots, on rooftops and construction sites.
This includes a 1.5-megawatt (MW) plant we set up in Giheung in 2019 and a 0.4MW plant in Pyeongtaek in 2020. Once installed, we can use the solar energy from these plants as electricity to run the sites.
By optimizing and implementing large-scale solar power installations and helping consumers buy electricity from renewable sources through green pricing, we help expand the world’s use of renewable energy.
Samsung Semiconductor USA Austin received the Excellence in Green Power Use from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in September 2019, which recognized us for our outstanding achievements in expanding the use of renewable energy. We increased the use of renewable energy from 3% to 100% by supporting green pricing and purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC).
Then in 2019, we worked with large companies like Apple, eBay and Sprint to purchase 75MW of renewable energy from large wind farms, and we are following up with a 200MW renewable energy contract with other wind farms in 2021. In addition, we continue to focus on efforts to expand the actual use of renewable energy.
