There was yet another challenge to overcome —the noise problem in low light or outdoor environments. Now that the pixel size was reduced, each pixel absorbed less light, which led to higher noise in low light settings.
To solve this problem, Samsung developed Nonapixel technology, which combines 9 adjacent pixels into one big pixel (in a 3×3 grid) to increase light absorption. The image sensor combines nine pixels into one, allowing it to absorb more light and thus produce bright, clear photos and videos with reduced noise, even in low light or outdoor environments.
This technology enables the image sensor to deliver optimized results by using 108 million small pixels 0.8㎛ in size in bright environments to produce sharp, high resolution photos and using larger pixels 2.4㎛ in size in low light environments to produce photos with enhanced light sensitivity.
