The Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy started in 2013 and has since become one of Samsung Semiconductor’s key social commitments to the youth community. At the academy, we teach the basic principles of semiconductors to first-year middle school students and run lab activities with different kinds of science experiment kits. As students learn about semiconductors, they start to see science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) in a new light and become more interested in them.
In 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy was taken online — and by going online, we were able to meet even more students than before.
The greatest reward in running the Samsung Semiconductor
Science Academy is when students
who
were not previously
familiar with semiconductors or
interested in the field discover that it’s actually fun and
easy to learn.
Kim-Kyubo who’s in his first year at Dongtan Middle School took the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy classes and had so much fun he recommended the program to his friends.
Park-Changwook who teaches at Dongtan Middle School also expressed his gratitude to us for running this educational program to allow students to learn more about semiconductors on an advanced level in a fun and easy to understand way.

Did you know that semiconductors are in almost everything
we use in our daily lives? Knowing
about semiconductors is
now a must, so
let’s learn together!

In 2021, the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy will be held four times. Each group of students will take 16 hours of classes in 8 sessions. And they will be offered two types of classes: "Get to Know the Basics” and “Lab Activity with Science Kits.”
Samsung Semiconductor employees have worked together to put
together online courses and science experiment kits which are
designed to teach first-year middle school students about
semiconductors from the basics to a
more advanced level. The eight
different kits have always been a great hit with the students.
The mobile phone kit allows students to
learn about the different semiconductors that go into phones.
And the electrical circuit kit shows how electronic devices
work. After completing the “Get to Know the Basics” and “Lab
Activity with Science Kits” courses, the program wraps up with
a session on science and engineering jobs and future career
paths. We hope this experience gives
students the chance to see what kind of future they could make
for themselves and possibly discover new dreams in the
process.
As part of Samsung Semiconductor’s social commitment activities, senior management and employees take on the role of teachers. They prepare thoroughly for the curriculum to share their specialized knowledge with the children in a way that’s easy to understand and also encouraging and engaging. The classes are held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so the instructors stand in front of cameras instead of a classroom full of students.

All the lab kits and Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy expenses were covered by donations from Samsung Semiconductor employees. The program and classes were also created by the employees who volunteered their time and expertise for the cause. Through these efforts, we hope that our students will grow and build a better future for everyone someday. Until then, we will continue our efforts to empower our students to become the future talent of tomorrow.

In 2021, we signed MOUs with several Offices of Education to offer the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy to more children. Partnering with the social welfare foundation Kids&Future Foundation, we signed agreements with the Offices of Education in the surrounding districts such as Yongin, Pyeongtaek, Anseong, Hwaseong, Osan and Asan. Thanks to these agreements; we are now able to reach out to more first-year middle school students than ever before through the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy.
In 2021, the number of schools participating in the program doubled and the number of students more than tripled compared to 2020. With the 2021 Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy expanding to 67 middle schools in the vicinity of Samsung Semiconductor sites such as Yongin, Pyeongtaek, Anseong, Hwaseong, Osan and Asan, as many as 14,000 students were able to take part in the program.
All of us at Samsung Semiconductor hope this program helps students interested in science, technology, engineering and maths (“STEM”) to take a step closer to their dreams and motivate those who weren’t previously interested in STEM or found these subjects difficult to discover new talent in themselves and explore new career paths.
