Insulator A material through which electricity or heat does not flow easily. Examples of insulators include glass, clay, plastic, rubber, wood, and more. Unlike a conductor, if energy is not asserted externally, there are no free electrons roaming around, which is why electrical current does not flow well. In the insulator diagram below, there is a big energy gap between the valence band and the conduction band. This energy gap is why a small amount of energy cannot bring the electrons from the valence band to the conduction band.
