At Samsung Austin Semiconductor, safety is our number one priority, whether it’s inside our fabs or around the Taylor construction site. As part of our commitment to being a good neighbor, we’ve been researching and implementing ways to alleviate traffic and improve driver safety around the Taylor site with the collaboration of local and state entities. As of November 2023, Samsung has six entrances to the site and also built an internal circulation road to/from the work site from US 79 and County Road 401. In mid-January, a traffic signal at FM 973 and CR 404 was activated and is currently providing traffic control measures. In addition to the traffic signal, Samsung's efforts led to Williamson County improving FM 973 by widening the road, adding a center turn lane, and creating dedicated turn lanes into the Samsung site.

Samsung addressed another traffic challenge with the Taylor Police Department regarding the US 79 and FM 973 intersection. Reportedly, drivers often make illegal right turns from US 79, which creates dangerous conditions. Taylor police is now placing officers in the area from time to time to help monitor the situation.

Williamson County Southwest Taylor Improvements Many of the road projects surrounding Samsung’s Taylor site are part of Williamson County’s Southwest Taylor Improvements. North of the Samsung Taylor site, CR 401 was reconstructed and extended to US 79. The project, which was completed in 2023, transformed CR 401 into a four-lane roadway to provide more vehicle capacity and added a traffic signal at the CR 409 and US 79 intersection. In October 2023, Segment 1 of Samsung Highway opened connecting FM 973 to CR 404. Segment 2 of Samsung Highway—connecting CR 404 to FM 3349—will be completed this summer.

One of the main arteries aimed to connect SH 130 to US 79 between Hutto and Taylor is the East WilCo Highway. Segment 1 of East WilCo Highway opened fall of 2023. Segment 3 is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in summer 2025. Construction on Segment 2, funded by last November’s transportation bond, is expected to start this spring. As the area continues to grow, Samsung will continue working with our local and state partners to provide traffic solutions for everyone who works and lives in the area.
