Samsung Electronics is to join the “Semiconductor Climate Consortium” as one of its Founding Members

  • mail
On Nov. 1st 2022, Samsung Electronics has joined the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), as one of its founding members, to voice out the semiconductor industry’s concern against the climate challenges. □ Semiconductor Industry gathered together to for a common goal, decarbonization. In correlation to technological progress, demand for silicon has grown exponentially in the last decade. However, meeting market demand inevitably amounted to more carbon emissions. As a result, the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, also known as “SEMI”, and industry leaders gathered to form the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), understanding that a joint effort to fight climate issues is now a necessity. The consortium holds its significance for being the first global collaboration initiated specifically to discuss solutions to the climate impact of the semiconductor industry. As one of key players of the value chain, Samsung Electronics is glad that this cooperative effort with SEMI and other founding members led to a meaningful result and is proud to be at the center of this achievement.

Samsung Electronics’ efforts for environmental sustainability for the industry has been persistent throughout. Noticing the need for industry’s environmental standard, Samsung has developed the “Semiconductor Environmental Performance Index” (SEPI) that rationally identifies a semiconductor entity’s environmental position to stakeholders. Not only so, Samsung Semiconductor has already been actively cooperating and contributing to building an eco-conscious environment by actively participating in major global initiatives such as RE100 and OCP Sustainability Initiative. As a founding member of the SCC, Samsung Electronics will continue to actively play its pivotal role and work in the spirit of collaboration with fellow members to present a reasonable standard that voices the semiconductor ecosystem’s sustainability to mitigate climate change. □ SCC Sharing Net Zero Ambition at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference This year November, Samsung also participated at the 27th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change1 Conference of Parties, also known as COP27, hosted at Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. The conference hosts 40,000 estimated attendees, including over 100 heads of states and government, discussing matters of climate concern and raising global awareness about the climate challenges ahead. At COP27, Claire HyunJung Seo, VP of DS Sustainability Management Office, was invited to speak at two official SCC inauguration events on Nov. 9th & 10th where she emphasized the importance of this collaboration and shared Samsung Electronics’ continuing effort toward Net Zero.

At the SCC inauguration event Claire said “Together with SEMI and members of the Consortium, Samsung Electronics will continue to incorporate environmental sustainability into our business through Collaboration, Transparency and Ambition” and emphasized that “we [Samsung Electronics] will keep on striving to build a sustainable future by developing technology that makes technology sustainable and keep driving toward climate goals”. As a leader of technology, Samsung Electronics aims to tackle climate change with technology at its core. The recently announced “New Environmental Strategy” delineates Samsung’s target to achieve Net Zero by 2050. On our journey to this milestone, we outlined 4 major goals for carbon reduction, water recycling, and waste management and pollutant removal. Samsung Electronics will continue to meticulously manage all stages of business operations, from raw material selection, product development, manufacturing to waste disposal, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
1 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was established in 1995 to assess and discuss climate change issues. Main agenda for the annual meeting includes reporting of greenhouse gas emission policy assessments and progress and Discussion of long-term global goal under the Convention.
