Samsung Electronics joins ‘OCP Global Summit 2022,’ blending breakthrough memory solutions with eco-conscious thinking

Samsung Electronics joined a chorus of tech leaders at the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit 2022 in San Jose this week from October 18-20. OCP is the world’s largest gathering of open data center technologists whose goal is to use the power of open source and open collaboration to build better hardware and software, while rapidly increasing the pace of innovation in data centers. On the morning of October 18, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Memory Business Software Development Team, Sangyeun Cho delivered a keynote address covering a range of topics including Samsung’s efforts and contribution to the development of open source-based technology . His address also touched on the importance of cooperation to form a sustainable technological ecosystem. “Close and borderless cooperation with all industry partners is essential to building a sustainable future in the era of exponential data growth,” Cho said, adding that , “Samsung will lead in forming the technological ecosystem and development with all-round efforts.”
□ Efforts for next-generation technology – Samsung’s Contribution to OCP and Open Source Starting in 2015, Samsung has gradually expanded its participation in the OCP summit while strengthening its commitment to open source. This year, Samsung made the leap to become an OCP Platinum member this year and finished open server specifications contribution for its Poseidon V1 data center storage system to the OCP community. By launching the Poseidon V2 as well, Samsung now supports the full line-up of EDSFF, the SSD form factor built for next-generation data centers. Meanwhile, since first revealing the storage system software ‘Poseidon OS’ on open-source last year, Samsung has been constantly updating the software. Samsung also certified the specification compatibility of ‘NVMe SSD’ for hyperscale data centers, which it kicked off mass production on last year. Samsung is now actively working to develop open memory software technologies, establishing a global open-source team of more than 100 participants from six countries around the world, including the United States and Denmark. □ Milestones for a sustainable future During this year’s event, Samsung also introduced its comprehensive sustainability efforts, touching on not only product innovation technologies but also solutions meant to make the entire process more sustainable from production to disposal. With a list of new innovations, Samsung shared a glimpse at the more energy saving future of data centers in the Big Data era, including a Smart SSD that saves energy by minimizing data processing efficiency, a Memory-Semantic SSD that improves data transfer efficiency and performance by up to 20 times, CXL DRAM that almost doubles DRAM capacity, and ultra-high Petabyte storage solutions. It also introduced plans to utilize a number of greenhouse gas reduction tools including process gas treatments and renewable energy through what’s called Regenerative Catalytic Systems. In addition, it shared insights on its success with various eco-conscious initiatives such as water resource reduction, waste management, and pollutant reduction, drawing attention from audience members who’ve followed Samsung’s success in implementing more eco-friendly measures. By emphasizing its eco-conscious leadership, Samsung is toeing a path to minimizing our impact on the environment that others might follow, sharing insights and achievements that are helping shape a sustainable future. Samsung also pledged to lead the push for environmental management in the overall semiconductor industry by participating in the OCP Sustainability Initiative. It also promised to create sustainable products that help both consumers and the environment, suggesting the OCP’s open-source roots as an ideal jumping off point for collaborating on future developments. □ Product Booths showcasing differentiated technology
Samsung Electronics operated five product booths displaying five different technologies, including Petabyte storage, Smart SSD, and CXL DRAM. Of special interest to showgoers were the core solutions mentioned in the keynote speech installed on Poseidon Servers, directly showing performance demonstrations. In addition, Samsung presented its technology for a sustainable future by displaying the ‘Product Carbon Footprint Label’ and ‘Reducing CO2’ certification awarded to it by UK Carbon Trust, making it the first in the global semiconductor industry to receive the award. Samsung Electronics is committing ongoing effort into technology development for a sustainable future. With a steady stream of updates and new products, it’s ensuring a world of innovative technologies and open solutions that will enhance daily life not only today, but well into the future.
