a Life CycleAssessment (LCA) process has been established
In order to calculate the environmental impact that occurs throughout the full life cycle of a product, Samsung Semiconductor established the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process. Over the course of approximately 11 months, Samsung Semiconductor established its own Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process for all products. Third-party verification of the reliability of this LCA process was completed by DNV, a global verification agency. This shows Samsung Semiconductor's commitment to measuring and reducing carbon emissions for the first time in the domestic semiconductor industry.
The LCA process refers to the quantitative analysis and evaluation of environmental impact that occurs throughout the full life cycle of a product, from raw material collection and production to logistics, product use, and disposal. Semiconductors go through hundreds of complicated manufacturing processes, making the LCA particularly difficult because of the large number and types of raw materials used. However, Samsung Semiconductor has applied the most appropriate methodologies for each product group, measured carbon emissions throughout the full life cycles of products from the raw material extraction to manufacturing which is within control of Samsung, and made efforts to calculate vast amounts of data.
Through the LCA process, Samsung Semiconductor plans to calculate the carbon emissions of all products, measuring and monitoring the carbon emissions of each product, in order to reduce carbon emissions going forward. The company hopes to go beyond measuring carbon emissions to produce a comprehensive Product Environmental Footprint.
We continue to strive towards a cleaner, greener future.
Verification of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process was performed based on ISO 14040, 14044, and 14067 for the calculation of carbon emissions, and performed based on the verification principle of ISO 14064. Through third-party verification, Samsung Semiconductor secured the reliability of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process that Samsung Semiconductor performs internally and the data calculated through it.
Samsung Electronics will, in the future, make it known that it is conducting LCA in accordance with international standards, and with verified and reliable data, it intends to communicate with our clients and stakeholders effectively. In the future, it also wants to pursue carbon reduction, going beyond the measurement of carbon footprints.
