NVMe

(Non-Volatile Memory Express)

PCIe interface-based protocol to improve performance and design flexibility of SSD-equipped servers and PCs.

NVMe was developed to maximize utilization of SSD performance. The technology boasts speeds 6x faster than the conventional SATA(Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) interface, which is optimized for HDDs(Hard Disk Drives).

The SATA interface can be a bottleneck of speed for the highest-performing SSDs. However, NVMe helps SSDs overcome the interface limitations and achieve their highest performance. Take the example of a supermarket. In the SATA, all the customers are lined up in one long line at a single cashier. In NVMe, there are multiple cashiers and multiple queues for faster customer processing. This way, NVMe is able to drastically reduce data processing standby times.
