AI and Big Data Memory Solutions: Improving our everyday lives

Complex tasks such as analyzing business performance data in real time, diagnosing rare diseases quickly using historic data, or simply watching TV or asking the location of the nearest coffee shop all have one thing in common – they all rely on the latest innovations in memory solutions. And with faster speeds and better-designed chips, they can be carried out in the home, at work, on the go – anywhere. Let’s look specifically at the home. Not only is it a living space, the past year has also shown the extent to which we can push boundaries and make our homes a school, an office, a surgery, a call center. Our families are living, learning and working alongside each other on different devices and are connecting to the outside world - and they’re able to do more than ever. Not only are they talking to other people on video calls, they’re also doing the analysis of data, using AI to spot trends and report back to them, and they’re using virtual assistants to answer their questions. The device in their hands is only part of the picture. The heavy lifting being done in data centers is making work and play time more seamless than before. Light years ahead Whether it’s for work, rest or play, wherever we are, we all call on the capability of memory solutions throughout the day. And now more than ever, as we rely on these solutions and the demands placed on them become greater, the latest innovations have arrived right on time. One such innovation, Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, revolutionizes the way memory is manufactured. EUV uses wavelengths of 13.5nm, which is light years ahead of the commonly used Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) lithography, which uses 193nm wavelengths. In real terms, that means finer circuitry and chips that are more powerful and efficient over the same surface area. Data centers are processing more data at an extraordinary rate in order to facilitate new AI and big data applications. That’s why this new class of memory is so vital. Data needs to be processed faster and with the latest memory manufacturing technology, it can. Data-driven advancements But it isn’t just speed that’s important. Accuracy is also vital when there are so many mission-critical operations being made with data. It’s now possible to stack eight 16 Gb DRAM dies on top of each other to create high bandwidth memory. Stacking the DRAM in this way enables each individual die to operate at optimum level, but with a smaller footprint than if they were next to each other. The result is memory that is up to the task of performing at the highest levels to train machine learning algorithms with speed and precision. The world of work and the shape of the data-driven society are changing forever. Data is informing so many facets of everyday life that innovation in memory solutions is now a necessity. Circuits are becoming smaller and more capable and the compute power to make our lives easier, more personalized and more insights-driven are growing all the time. Samsung’s leadership in this area has given families, businesses and workers globally the power to develop and make use of new AI and big data tools to do more than they could have imagined was possible in years gone by.
