Samsung Electronics Signs MOU with QCT to Define CXL 2.0

Through partnering with QCT, Samsung looks forward to advancing CXL solutions and expanding its ecosystem.

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize its collaboration with Quanta Cloud Technology (QCT). This agreement outlines the technical cooperation between two companies to verify and identify applications of CXL memory solutions that can deliver significant practical benefits to the IT industry. With the recent explosion of data, driven in part by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance CPUs are integrating more cores onto a single chip to facilitate increased data processing capabilities.

To effectively utilize these high-performance CPUs, sufficient memory is required. However, the memory architecture of current server systems, which have been utilized thus far, can only expand its capacity within a limited range. As a result, it cannot meet the performance requirements for the near future, considering the diverse range of applications. Furthermore, devices such as memory and storage have their own interfaces that connect them to the CPU in conventional platforms. Data communication between these various interfaces introduces additional latency and degrades system performance.

Consequently, there has been significant demand for a standardized interface to enhance communication. CXL is a next-gen interface that efficiently connects various devices such as CPUs, GPUs, memory and storage with high level of flexibility. CMM-D is well-positioned to meet the industry’s increasing demand for high-capacity memory solutions and open a new chapter in commercial adoption of the CXL interface.

Since the introduction of the 128GB CXL DRAM supporting CXL 2.0 to the industry last year, Samsung has successfully developed the 256GB CXL Memory Module DRAM (CMM-D), a DRAM solution based on the PCIe interface that supports the CXL protocol.

QCT will offer a full portfolio of servers and solutions that deliver optimized performance and essential computing power for a variety of data center workloads with Samsung’s memory products. Up to 8 pieces of Samsung’s 256GB CMM-D can be installed on QCT’s latest generation of sever system (QuantaGrid D55X-1U) which supports CXL 2.0 and E3.S interfaces. By adopting CMM-D, server systems can expand DRAM capacity by up to 50% and bandwidth by up to 96%.

This allows for a significant expansion of memory capacity without the need for additional systems. Samsung and QCT has been working together to validate and qualify CMM-D in QCT’s server systems. The two companies continue to collaborate to uncover the value of CXL memory solutions.

“QCT is excited to partner with Samsung to support CXL 2.0 and advanced next-gen architectures,” said Mike Yang, President of QCT. “This agreement facilitates our organization’s adoption of Samsung’s CMM-D into our latest QuantaGrid servers and we see this as an opportunity that will ultimately benefit the entire industry.”

“Samsung, as a member of the CXL Consortium Board of Directors, has been working closely with CXL ecosystem partners across the board, such as global data center, server and chipset vendors as well as CXL software companies and academia,” said Jangseok Choi, vice president of New Business Planning Team at Samsung Electronics. “Our CXL 2.0 partnership with QCT is an exemplary case of collaboration for CXL memory solutions, which will accelerate the ecosystem CXL adoption.
