Samsung Semiconductor has sites in five cities: Giheung, Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, Onyang and Cheonan. Each site has been striving to reduce their environmental impact while offering support to local communities’ sustainable growth. Our efforts have been focused on sustainable activities to create better everyday lives and a better environment for children and local communities. In 2021, as part of these ongoing efforts, we launched the Upcycling Campaign. We also upcycled the semiconductor kits used during Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy classes and donated the renewed kits to children in need in the local community.

Recycling becomes
meaningful upcycling

Crumpled white paper waste in a green trash can with a white recycling mark.

At Samsung Semiconductor, we take recycling seriously by emptying, cleaning and separating the waste we generate. In doing so,
we have been able to reduce the amount of plastic waste and recycle more items than before. That averages out to a 7.2-ton monthly increase in recycling and a 1.2-ton daily reduction in waste. The waste separated to be recycled is turned into new material: clear PET plastic bottles are used to make recycled fabrics, paper is used for recycled paper, plastic bags for fuel and coffee capsules for aluminum products. The emptying, cleaning and separating campaign also served as an inspiration for the Upcycling Campaign. And through that campaign, we shared the value of upcycling with children in the community.

“The children were fascinated with the
presents. Some wanted to know how
disposable plastic waste was turned into
these new objects.
Many were looking
forward to assembling the jump ropes during
the holidays to exercise. Thank you for such
joyful and meaningful gifts.”Yongin Good Neighbor Child Welfare Center

“It was an excellent first-hand experience
learning how the things we throw away can
be turned into such fun products.
We had some great conversations with the
children on the importance of recycling.
Thank you for continuing to support the
local communities.”Mulpurae Child Welfare Center

The upcycled science kit project was made possible thanks to the students who had attended the Samsung Semiconductor Science Academy. About 80% of the students from four schools in Yongin happily donated their own semiconductor kits, resulting in a total of 324 kits available for upcycling. The kits were sent to a manufacturer to be upcycled and the Samsung Happy Whale volunteers created instructional videos. The students’ science kits were passed to children at the local afterschool centers, along with the joy of sharing, so the children were able to learn more about semiconductors while experiencing sustainable efforts first-hand.

We are building a
sustainable infrastructure
to create a cleaner
environment for the
children

We are striving to do our part to create better lives for the community and to create a better future.
And to help children learn about Samsung’s advanced technology as well as experience ways to take steps toward a greener future, we continue to build a sustainable infrastructure for society.
