[Tech Day 2022] System LSI Strategy for Moving Forward in the 4th Industrial Revolution

  • mail
Defined by three categories, hyper-intelligence, hyper-data, and hyper-connectivity, the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be driven by the IT and semiconductor industries. In his opening keynote at this year’s Samsung Tech Day event, John Yong-In Park, president of the System LSI business within Samsung’s Device Solutions division, highlighted the driving force behind this new industrial era and how System LSI is moving the industry forward with a fierce focus on innovation. He said, “In an age that requires machines to learn and think as people do, the importance of logic chips, which play the roles of the brain, heart, nervous system, eyes and etc., is growing to unprecedented levels.”

With the goal of enabling machines to carry out actions just as well as humans, System LSI is bringing together systems on a chip (SoCs), sensors, display driver IC, security solutions, and power management integrated circuits (PMICs) to provide the foundation for the three categories of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Combined, these semiconductor chips of System LSI business will be provided as a platform solution that can maximize user experiences. This will be the cornerstone of System LSI’s vision and mission that puts emphasis on providing a “System LSI Semicon Humanoid” solution that helps people and saves lives. SoCs: Hyper-Intelligence & Hyper-Connected As the brain of the machine, hyper-intelligence comes from the SoC. SoCs power capabilities such as recognizing, computing, learning, and decision-making. These fuel actions and store memory, just as a human brain would. Furthermore, the hyper-connected is realized through ultra-fast modem and connectivity technology.

Until now, Samsung has dedicated its focus on the premium SoC that includes CPU, GPU, NPU, and 5G modems. This effort has been possible through close collaboration with industry-leading partners. Moving forward, in addition to premium SoCs, System LSI plans to expand its competitive mid-range and wearable SoC lineups. Expansion in SoCs’ applications will bring to life the System LSI Semicon Humanoid. Sensors and Display ICs: Hyper-Data The Fourth Industrial Revolution requires a class of sensors that emulates the five senses of human beings, and we are expanding our portfolio to meet that demand for hyper-data. In his keynote, Park likens camera sensor technology to the eyes of the human, because sensors capture a vast amount of data. The resolution of the human eye far exceeds the capabilities of camera sensor technology, but we are on a path to change that. The efforts of the System LSI to advance ultra-high resolution camera sensors is driven by a clear business mission: “We are working to bring camera sensors beyond the capabilities of the human eye,” Park states.

System LSI has released 200Mp sensors and offers dynamic range capability up to 80dB, and with the human eye at a level of 576Mp and 140dB dynamic range, there is a growing need to close this gap. System LSI is always working to enhance camera sensor technology and continues to develop the most advanced ISOCELL sensors for this task, as well as many others. Notably, Samsung is leading the ultra-high resolution image sensor market with diverse 108Mp product lineup and cutting-edge technologies. But System LSI has taken its innovation even further and are now looking to continue to hold that position in ultra-high resolution segment by shipping a 200-million-pixel sensor to the market.

To fully appreciate the hyper-data captured, display technology has also become very significant. With displays being available everywhere from smartphones to TVs to billboards and automobiles, digital display has truly become an integral part of everyday life. System LSI, the industry's leading display driver IC provider, has always pursued low-power, high quality display driver ICs. Through efforts like these, we will bring the real world to life on screens and deliver a level of quality, vibrancy, and life-like reality we've never seen before. PMICs and Security Solutions: Fundamental technology The heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to every part of our body and regulates the amount of circulation based on our activity. Just like the heart, power management IC (or “PMIC”) manages power to help the critical components in the system to operate at their optimal level.

“We are focusing our efforts on five key areas: SoC PMIC, Display PMIC, Camera PMIC, Memory PMIC, and Battery PMIC. These are the areas that provide energy to the System LSI Semicon Humanoid solution and bring it to life.” said Park. Last but not least, System LSI’s security solutions are an essential part of Semicon Humanoid for strong protection. Park notes, “The security of the humanoid is akin to the human immune system, protecting you from outside threats.”
