Take an Unforgettable Photo with Your Smartphone! Image Sensors That Produce Amazing Photo Quality

  • mail
Samsung recently announced ISOCELL HM3, a new 108MP image sensor packed with cutting-edge photography technologies with enhanced light sensitivity that help produce photos that are so outstanding, you won’t believe it was taken by a smartphone camera. Are you interested in finding out how Samsung overcame many physical challenges to create this image sensor with world-leading technology? The Secret of Sharp Photos, 108 Million Pixels

One of the most important factors in photography is the resolution, which is partly determined by the number of pixels. A greater number of pixels leads to more precise and higher resolution photos. Samsung started leading the premium image sensor market with its 108MP image sensors released last year. This level of high resolution enables even the texture of skin to be captured by smartphone cameras. ISOCELL Technology Reduces Interference Between Pixels

Samsung encountered many challenges in creating a 108MP image sensor. The first challenge was to reduce the pixel size. 108 million pixels needed to be integrated into an image sensor chip the size of a fingernail.

Reducing the pixel size was a big challenge itself, but another challenge was encountered once the pixel size was reduced. The smaller pixel size not only decreased the amount of light entering each pixel but also caused the light to leak into the adjacent pixels, which is a phenomenon called “interference.” Signals entering a pixel from adjacent pixels are interpreted as noise by the image sensor and decrease color definition. Therefore, it was very important to prevent light from leaking into neighboring pixels.

Samsung was able to reduce color interference and optical loss dramatically by adding a physical barrier between neighboring pixels, called ISOCELL technology No More Noise in Night Scenes! Nonapixel Provides Enhanced Light Sensitivity in Low Light Conditions

There was yet another challenge to overcome —the noise problem in low light or outdoor environments. Now that the pixel size was reduced, each pixel absorbed less light, which led to higher noise in low light settings. To solve this problem, Samsung developed Nonapixel technology, which combines 9 adjacent pixels into one big pixel (in a 3×3 grid) to increase light absorption. The image sensor combines nine pixels into one, allowing it to absorb more light and thus produce bright, clear photos and videos with reduced noise, even in low light or outdoor environments. This technology enables the image sensor to deliver optimized results by using 108 million small pixels 0.8㎛ in size in bright environments to produce sharp, high resolution photos and using larger pixels 2.4㎛ in size in low light environments to produce photos with enhanced light sensitivity.
