On August 24 – at the Dell Technologies Forum 2022, held at the COEX Convention Center in Seoul – Samsung Electronics drew the attention of onsite participants with keynote speeches and presentations. Samsung also exhibited next-generation memory solutions optimized for the era of data explosion at the company’s booth. ※ Dell Technologies Forum 2022: An annual technology forum hosted by Dell Technologies to showcase new information and technology (IT) solutions and explore the latest technology trends. The event was held face-to-face for the first time since 2019, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to be held exclusively online. Over 60 leading companies participated in this year’s Forum, including Samsung, Intel and Microsoft, hosting a series of 38 breakout sessions that covered a wide range of topics including subscription services, the multi-cloud, hybrid working environments, data centers and edge. Participating brands also operated corporate booths where visitors had access to additional information on products and services. At the same time, 25 online sessions were held to continue the Forum’s digital presence and accommodate participants who couldn’t attend in person. Sustainable Management Keynote: Samsung Electronics’ Achievements and Visions Accomplished Via Eco-conscious Technology Innovations in the Semiconductor Sector HyunJung Seo, Vice President of DS Corporate Sustainability Management at Samsung Electronics, delivered a keynote on the subject of technologies that help make other technologies more sustainable. The talk, which was conversational in nature, took place alongside SungJun Kim, Senior Director of Dell Technologies Korea. The keynote focused principally on how Samsung, as a supply chain partner of several major IT companies, is working continuously to push innovative, eco-conscious technologies for a more sustainable future and create value for its partners in the process. These innovations aim to minimize the impact the semiconductor production process has on the environment and target every stage of the product cycle, from development to disposal. Solutions Optimized for the Data Explosion Era: The Introduction of High-performance, High-efficiency, High-capacity Memory Solutions in Next-generation Technology KyungRyun Kim, Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, gave a breakout session presentation titled “Step Forward to the Future with Samsung Memory Solutions”. Kim’s presentation highlighted the problems faced by an industry that is seeing and will continue to see, an ever-growing demand for data. The talk covered the circumstances surrounding the data explosion era and proposed relevant solutions. Kim, at the outset of his presentation, forecasted the arrival of an unprecedented societal age of hyper-connectivity. As technologies such as AI, the metaverse, the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous driving and 5G and 6G communication services develop their capabilities and expand their reach, it is expected that 76 billion devices will be interconnected with one another by 2030. Inevitably, such an expansion will be accompanied by an exponential increase in data needs, bringing with it issues of rising costs and even environmental impacts. For instance, increased demand for data processing necessitates the building of more data centers, which requires the purchase and maintenance of more land, while the associated carbon dioxide emissions could lead to an acceleration in global warming if not properly accounted for. Data Explosion Era Solutions Front and Center at the Samsung Electronics Booth Samsung, which participated in the Dell Technologies Forum as a platinum sponsor, presented a booth at the event which displayed several next-generation memory products. The field of applications for new and future memory solutions – which includes data centers, AI, machine learning and autonomous driving – has expanded significantly. Samsung also introduced memory products at COEX designed to meet prominent demands in various areas of data technology development, such as performance, capacity, and power efficiency. Three products that Samsung put particular emphasis on were Double Data Rate 5 Dynamic Random Access Memory (DDR5 DRAM), PM1743 Solid State Drive (SSD) and 2nd Generation Smart SSD. DDR5 DRAM is a next-generation DRAM standard and its workload-based performance has improved by more than 98% when compared to DDR4, the previous version. PM1743 is a high-performance SSD used in enterprise servers and based on the next-generation PCIe 5.0 standard. Compared to the previous standard, PCIe 4.0, bandwidth has doubled and power efficiency has improved by roughly 40%. 2nd Generation Smart SSD offloads central processing unit (CPU) operations to the storage level, reducing data processing time in SSD to 50% when compared to current technology. Energy consumption is also reduced by 70%. At the forum, the Samsung booth gained the attention of visitors by directly comparing the real-time performance of a server equipped with a DDR5 module and PCIe 5.0 SSD with a server equipped with a DDR4 module and PCIe 4.0 SSD. Samsung also exhibited its Product Carbon Footprint Certification and its Carbon Reduction Certification, which were awarded by the UK Carbon Trust, which made Samsung the first global semiconductor company to achieve such certification. These certifications validate Samsung’s efforts to implement eco-conscious management activities to create a more sustainable future for all. ※ The Carbon Trust: A non-profit organization, established by the British government in 2001, in charge of sharing information and supporting and certifying new technologies and innovations to reduce carbon emissions. ※ Product Carbon Footprint Certification: A certification granted to products that have calculated carbon emissions in accordance with the carbon footprint calculation standard at multiple levels of production, from development to disposal.
