10 ES&H Commandments

  • 1. All accidents can be prevented.
  • 2. Abide by laws and guidelines
    and go one step further.
  • 3. Find the answers on-site.
  • 4. The enemy of safety is not risk
    but indifference.
  • 5. Disclose and share injustices
    and changes.
  • 6. Do not work if there are safety
    issues.
  • 7. Find the source of the risk and
    continue to make improvements
until the risk factor is gone.
  • 8. Think of partners and
    colleagues as family.
  • 9. Continue researching and
    applying the findings.
  • 10. Make the workplace safer
    than your own home.

Creating a safe place to work means we must take action before accidents happen. That’s why we manage safety by securing our facilities, increasing awareness and implementing safety programs for all of our employees and partners. In addition, as part of the basic measures to establish a culture of safety, we carry out campaigns such as “No to Using Smartphones While Walking” and “Clean & Clear” to promote everyday safety at work. We also have our 10 Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Commandments that serve as a daily reminder for executives and employees.

Global Manufacturing/EHS Innovation Day for
higher workplace safety standards

Global Manufacturing/EHS Innovation Day for higher
workplace safety standards

To raise workplace safety standards, Samsung has held the annual EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) Innovation Day every year since 2013. In 2019, the CE·IM division and the DS division began holding separate events that were tailored to each division’s operations. The event became bigger as it covered the areas of manufacturing and environmental safety and was renamed "Global Manufacturing/EHS Innovation Day." On this day, each division shares their case studies on evaluating EHS risks in manufacturing and processing and on improving EHS management.

In 2020, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Display, Samsung SDI and Samsung Biologics held a joint Global Manufacturing/EHS Innovation Day to share various benchmark examples such as the new Pyeongtaek site facilities and best manufacturing practices. A total of 61 cases of innovation in safety awareness improvement, unmanned systems and automation and environmentally responsible practices were also shared. Sessions run by experts provided insight to employees and partners on ways to create innovative and safe workplaces, while partners led sessions sharing their best innovation practices and practical know-how. In 2021, due to COVID-19, the event was held online. Samsung Semiconductor, Samsung SDC, Samsung SDI, Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Samsung Biologics each shared best practices for the three key tasks discovered at the event last year. Additionally, 35 tasks related to safety innovation, eco-friendly and future technologies, and 64 new tasks to create synergy between parts makers were also developed.

Samsung carries out regular fire drills so employees stay prepared in the event of safety-related accidents. The drills include evacuating and responding to earthquakes and chemical spills. 2,686 emergency drills were conducted in 2020, and on average, each employee participated in about 1.1 drills and participated in around 17 hours of emergency preparedness training in the same year.

For employees to be ready to respond swiftly in actual emergencies, we hold a wide range of emergency preparedness training exercises. The training exercises range from cardio resuscitation to using fire extinguishers, descending life lines and air mattresses and earthquake drills.
