By joining the RE100 initiative in 2022, Samsung Semiconductor has pledged to transition to using 100% renewable energy-based electricity. Starting with our US and Chinese business sites that were converted to 100% renewable energy in 2020, we aim to contribute to reducing Scope 2 emissions from electricity use by expanding the use of renewable energy across all of our global business sites by 2050.

In 2018, Samsung Semiconductor announced its plan to introduce and implement 100% renewable energy at all of its plants in the U.S. and China, and in 2019, the company replaced all its electricity systems with renewable energy, one year ahead of schedule. In 2020, Samsung Semiconductor achieved 100% transition to renewable energy for electricity used in all of its overseas operations, including the U.S. and China.

    Using renewable energy at domestic business sites

    Samsung Semiconductor has large-scale renewable energy facilities at each of its business sites. We have installed solar power generation facilities in various spaces, including parking lots, building rooftops, and new construction sites. In 2019, we installed a 1.5MW facility at our Giheung plant, following which we installed a 0.4MW large-scale solar power generation facility in the parking lot of our Pyeongtaek plant in 2020. We also established 0.3MW of solar power generation facilities at our Hwaseong plant, 0.3MW at our Onyang plant, and 1.1MW at SAIT, and use the solar energy generated to power our plants. We also installed geothermal power generation facilities at our Hwaseong, Pyeongtaek, and SAIT plants to supply power to the plants. To expand the use of renewable energy, Samsung Semiconductor is developing and implementing optimal plans that are feasible for each region, such as jointly responding to RE100 by signing business agreements with renewable energy generators.

    Taking the lead with
    Green Power Leadership

    Samsung Semiconductor USA Austin received the Excellence in Green Power Use from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in September 2019, which recognized us for our outstanding achievements in expanding the use of renewable energy. We increased the use of renewable energy from 3% to 100% by supporting green pricing and purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC).

    Then in 2019, we worked with large companies like Apple, eBay and Sprint to purchase 75MW of renewable energy from large wind farms, and also made a 200MW renewable energy contract with other wind farms in 2021. In addition, we continue to focus on efforts to expand the actual use of renewable energy.
