The percentage by which photons or electrons in a material are converted into photons or electrons of a different energy.
When converted into photons, it is also called luminance efficiency.

※ Internal quantum efficiency and external quantum efficiency When there is a large loss on the surface and the inside of a material, it is distinguished by internal quantum efficiency and external quantum efficiency. Some of the light energy obtained through excitation of the light or electron beams is absorbed by the material or scattered on the surface before exiting. Therefore, the ratio converted into light energy is called the internal efficiency, while the ratio of light energy exiting the material is called the external efficiency. When these ratios are expressed by converting them into the number of photons (quantum), they are respectively referred as the internal quantum efficiency and the external quantum efficiency.
