The NPU is what enables the Exynos 990 to facilitate swift and efficient AI processing. Optimized for the computation of deep learning algorithms, the NPU offers the performance required to handle the most demanding of AI operations. These include functions and services like augmented reality, intelligent assistants and image recognition. The processor’s powerful, dual-core NPU and enhanced digital signal processor (DSP) take the intelligence of its predecessor – which featured a single-core NPU and DSP – to new heights. This powerful combination enables the Exynos 990 to perform approx. fifteen trillion operations per second (TOPs) with support for faster processing speeds and improved AI instruction sets. Life in the fast lane with 5G 5G has been one of the biggest buzzwords in tech for quite some time, and for good reason. The fifth generation of cellular technology is poised to supercharge wireless networks with unparalleled speeds and instantaneous connections. That translates to blazing fast downloads and uploads, with negligible latency. For creatives, 5G’s rollout sets the stage for a new generation of digital creation tools that respond to input in real time, and blur the line between the virtual and real worlds.

The combination of the Exynos 990 and Samsung’s new 5G cellular modem, the Exynos Modem 5123, places the keys to unlocking 5G’s ultra-fast mobile broadband speeds in the palm of your hand.1 The Exynos Modem 5123 enables the Exynos 990 to function on virtually any and all major networks, from 2G to 5G. On 5G networks, the modem fosters maximum downlink speeds of up to 5.1Gbps on the sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) spectrum, and 7.35Gbps in mmWave, with up to 8x carrier aggregation (CA).2 Its predecessor supports speeds of up to 2Gbps and 6Gbps, respectively, under the same conditions. Furthermore, the modem delivers uncompromised speeds on 4G LTE, with download speeds of up to 3Gbps.2 The modem also supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC), which combines LTE and 5G connectivity to deliver next-level mobile internet speeds. Making smart cameras smarter AI-powered cameras leverage intelligence to optimize settings and take the guesswork out of snapping the perfect shot. High-performance mobile processors like the Exynos 990 take smart cameras’ convenience to the next level with enhanced speed and accuracy. Accuracy that the NPU and image signal processor (ISP) make possible.

Say you’re about to take a photo of a scenic sunset, or posing for a selfie. Before you take the shot, the NPU detects the type of scene you’re about to shoot, and the ISP automatically adjusts settings like white balance, sharpness and exposure to produce an optimal image. So the colors in your sunset shot appear rich and vibrant, and your selfie is optimized to suit the lighting conditions and your unique skin tone. The Exynos 990 supports up to six individual sensors, compared to its predecessor’s five, with the concurrent processing of three for diverse multi-camera setups. This allows the processor to foster a truly pro-grade camera experience, complete with better tone mapping for natural colors and contrast, less noise and better detail in low light, as well as ultra-high resolution. Support for over 100 million pixels allows users to snap photos at a level of detail never before seen on a mobile device. Brains and brawn The brains, as it were, of smartphone or tablet is its central processor, or CPU. It’s what makes the whole thing work – allocating tasks to specific chips, and carrying out the processing necessary to get the job done.

The Exynos 990’s fifth-generation custom CPU is engineered to power the next wave of mobile experiences. Its tri-cluster architecture offers the perfect balance of performance (up to 20 percent better than its predecessor ) and efficiency. This makes everything from multitasking, gaming and streaming, to editing videos and installing apps, faster and smoother. Not to mention easier on the battery. The Exynos 990 also boasts support for LPDDR5, a new standard for mobile DRAM that enables the processor to facilitate data transfers of up to 44GB per second. Game-changing gameplay Any discussion about powering the next-level mobile experiences that we’ve discussed thus far, should include an examination of the GPU. The GPU is the circuit that’s dedicated solely to the processing of graphics operations or floating point calculations. GPU power is especially important when it comes to gaming, as it can mean the difference between a high-quality, console-like mobile gaming experience, and one that’s simply not up to snuff.

The Exynos 990’s Arm® Mali™-G77 MP11 GPU was built to power immersive and engaging gaming experiences, with next-level 3D graphics processing. Based on the Valhall architecture, which includes a new superscalar engine that enhances both power efficiency and performance density, the Exynos 990 offers up to 20 percent better graphics performance than its predecessor.3 Moreover, the GPU’s redesigned execution engine increases performance density with enhanced texture throughput. This makes extended gaming sessions truly seamless, and makes gameplay itself that much more immersive. Cinematic experience The Exynos 990’s advanced multi-format codec (MFC) – the technology that enables the encoding and decoding of video files of various formats – allows the processor to support both high-quality video playback and intelligent video recording. And it does this while consuming less power than its predecessor.

The processor’s new bandwidth compression technology drastically reduces the amount of bandwidth required to encode and decode video files. Furthermore, its upgraded perceptual video coding algorithm optimizes image quality by enhancing parts of the image frame that are deemed to be sensitive to viewers based on human beings’ visual cognitive characteristics. The Exynos 990’s advanced NPU also enables users to inject some creative flair into their content by adding effects like bokeh for film-like depth of field. In addition to empowering the creation of incredible content, the Exynos 990 opens the door for users to enjoy much more seamless and immersive viewing experiences. That’s because, in addition to offering 10-bit video and HDR display capability, the processor supports 4K UHD at 60Hz refresh-rate and QHD+ at 120Hz that make animations smoother – even on devices with multiple displays – and reduces screen tearing when gaming. This makes it easier for users to immerse themselves in the on-screen action. Iron-clad security Because mobile security is more important than ever, the Exynos 990 features a wealth of security enhancements that safeguard users’ personal information. Included among these are a new DRAM encryption engine, a stage-2 memory protection unit (S2MPU), and a newly integrated secure element (iSE) layer that stores and manages users’ personal data separately from the operating system environment. To further bolster security, and to streamline authentication processes, the processor also includes a physically unclonable function (PUF), also known as a digital fingerprint, that generates an unclonable key for data encryption using the unique physical characteristics of each chip. Create your world From enabling the next wave of AI camera functions, to paving the way for more seamless and immersive viewing experiences, the Exynos 990 empowers mobile device users to create incredible content without limitations.
