Samsung Electronics opened the doors to an entirely new storage market in 2006 with the launch of the HDD-that replaced the “32GB SSD”. Then, in 2016, Samsung became the first in the industry to break through the 10TB mark, and in 2018 launched a 30.72TB product, the largest single-drive storage solution ever. Samsung’s “super-gap” technology multiplied storage capacity by more than 1,000 times in just 12 years since the launch of the first SSD.

Samsung did more than just double both speed and capacity; in the span of just two years, “innovative software and process technologies” never before implemented in memory products were developed as well. These technologies were able to meet the demand of global IT customers seeking broader applications for ultra-high capacity SSDs, introducing an entirely new paradigm into the SDD market.

We met with the engineers behind the planning, development, and completion of this groundbreaking product. They had much to say about the advantages of the product, as well as some interesting stories to share from its development.

The combined effort of the entire Memory Business Division - all its departments and staff - was necessary to give rise to this one very special product. We asked Vice President Oh Moon Wook and Executive Vice President Kyung Kye Hyun, representing Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Division at the awards ceremony, for their thoughts.
