Develops industry-leading cellular modem-RF system, application processor and multimedia solutions for future generations of mobile devices.

Focus

We develop the best-in-class cellular modems (5G NR, 4G LTE) and innovative SOC multimedia solutions for Samsung Exynos platforms. We research new technologies on 6G, AI/ML and computer vision. Our lab members are in close collaboration with global Samsung teams, customers, business partners, and academic research groups around the world. Our R&D activities include:

  • Design and implementation of 5G modem baseband algorithms
  • New technology development for 3GPP standards and 6G
  • Modem-RF system solutions with innovative ideas for performance and power optimization
  • Multimedia algorithm development for computational photography, computer vision, and speech processing
  • Design and implementation of deep learning algorithms

Circuit Design

Engineering the next-generation mobile
communication technology

Develops RFIC and ASIC for future generations of mobile devices.

Focus

Develop the best-in-class chipset solutions for the future wireless applications including sub-6GHz/mmWave 5G, low-power wearable device supporting WiFi, BT, and GNSS. This requires a highly competitive feature set and excellent overall performance with optimized power consumption and cost. To achieve this goal, our lab members are in close collaboration with other Samsung teams, our business partners and customers around the world.

  • RFIC architecture, specification, and chip definition
  • mmWave and RF Circuit Design : Phased Array, RF front-end, LNA, PA, RX/TX
  • PLL design: Fractional-N, analog and digital PLL, VCO, LDOs, mixed-signal IP
  • Research advanced high frequency package and module
  • Work with Platform Hardware and FW teams to commercialize the chipset
  • ASIC development: RTL design, DV, and DFT, PIPD for digital signal processing and control blocks

Develop best-in-class location technology for mobile applications, and provide location IP for discrete GNSS ICs and integrated SoCs. Emphasizing:

Wi-Fi

Engineering solutions for next-generation Wi-Fi technology

Develops next generation Wi-Fi for Samsung Connectivity solutions. Focus is on developing next generation embedded firmware for Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 and beyond, as well as advanced PHY/Algorithm and Standards development.

Focus

Develop best-in-class Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) and SOC Solutions (embedded firmware, advanced PHY algorithms and Standards development in IEEE/WFA). This requires a high level of coordination between emerging standards in Wi-Fi PHY/MAC and incorporating them into our Products and Firmware/Software. To achieve this goal, our lab members are in close collaboration with other Samsung teams, our business partners and customers around the world.

  • Develop next generation standards in PHY/MAC for Wireless LANs (Wi-Fi)
  • Design and develop embedded firmware features for Wi-Fi
  • Focus on Wi-Fi 6/6E and 7 from an embedded firmware stack perspective
  • Developing Wi-Fi based location protocol such as 11mc/11az and beyond
  • Optimizations in Data and Control Path(s) of the Wi-Fi embedded stack
  • Interoperability and SQA testing/optimization of commercial solutions
  • System modeling using MATLAB, LLS for PHY blocks in Samsung SOC
  • Developing advanced PHY/DSP algorithms for Samsung Connectivity
  • Performance evaluation and verification of PHY/MAC solutions post-Si bring-up
  • Modeling using ns3 for next generation Wi-Fi MAC standards

Interface Lab

Enabling high-speed data transfer in displays, cameras, memories, and SOC

Develops high-speed serial interfaces for chip to chip interconnects across a variety of products.

Focus

Develop low-power high-speed interfaces transferring data at 10’s of Giga bits per second to enable high bandwidth connectivity between various integrated circuits including display to SOC, sensor to SOC, and SOC to memory. Some example interfaces are Display Port, D-PHY, C-PHY. Our work includes:

  • System Analysis and Design: Equalization techniques, clock and data recovery, system timing analysis.
  • Analog Circuit Design: Analog front-end, Decision Feedback Equalizers, PLL, CDR
  • PHY Controller Design: Calibration and adaptation engines to enable high performance
  • Protocol Design: Error correcting codes, bit-to-pixel mapping, transition encoding
  • High-Performance Package and PCB Design: Meticulously engineered to enable Gb/s data transfer
  • FPGA Platforms: Demonstration hardware incorporating FPGA high-speed I/O, custom chips, and peripheral hardware
