Samsung Memory Takes the High Road to Innovation

  • mail
High powered supercomputing isn’t an end goal, it’s an enabler. It will help us to do things in the future that used to be impossible. The big dreams of hyper-connected worlds where AI solves complex problems are upon us but without the best performing memory solutions, we’ll always be stuck in the slow lane. Take automotive solutions for example. The car you drive now won’t be the car you drive in the era where autonomy is commonplace. For self-driving cars to be a reality, huge amounts of data will need to be generated and analyzed in real time. As such, a car’s performance won’t just be revealed on its own specifications sheet. The capabilities of the associated memory solutions will also be vital information to know. Or how about high definition graphics? Manufacturers have long been in search of not just delivering the most immersive on-screen visuals, they have also been trying to do so with the most efficient hardware. For gaming in particular, there is always a way to raise the bar by stacking more bandwidth into a single memory package. That’s why Samsung’s High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is so revolutionary. The latest generation has been highly optimized for high-performance computing and offers the performance to power next-generation technologies. And when the stakes are high, you need solutions that will deliver and do so reliably. Faster and better – a new generation HBM2E Flashbolt is Samsung’s third generation High Bandwidth Memory 2E (HBM2E). With HBM2E Flashbolt, Samsung is building on its experience in leading high-end technological advancement in everything from AI algorithms and data science to autonomous driving and 5G. The enhancements from the previous generation HBM solutions are impressive. The capacity is doubled to 16GB. This delivers the ability to realize high-definition graphics while expanding data processing capabilities. Then there are the data transfer speeds. Much has been made of the internet speeds that 5G will grant to both consumers and businesses. But reaching the full potential means the data has to move rapidly also. In the case of the HBM2E Flashbolt, the speeds reach 3.6Gbps. This sets us well on our way to discovering exactly what 5G can do and gets the imagination racing for the future. Reassuringly, the speed is accompanied by stability so the HBM solution is reliable as well as quick. Reliability also gets a boost with the HBM2E Flashbolt’s On Die ECC solution. ODECC enables self-correction of internal errors to enhance the recovery of corrupted data and lower the frequency of refreshes. Single bit errors are reduced for the overall improvement of data reliability as well. The power to know more The 460GB/s bandwidth of the HBM2E Flashbolt helps autonomous driving to become a reality. Self-driving cars need to constantly monitor the conditions they’re driving in. What are the other cars around them doing? What is the weather and how will it affect braking times and distance? How busy are the roads? These are all variables that vehicles need to consider if they are to drive with precision and safety. High bandwidth enables all this data to be analyzed in order for cars to react to constantly changing conditions. Not just that, they will be able to predict risk factors and take the appropriate action preemptively. This is all done while increasing power efficiency – the HBM2E Flashbolt is more efficient than its predecessor. Advanced supercomputing applications are making progress all the time and there’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to the things that 5G will enable. But this isn’t just a conversation about the future because the HBM2E Flashbolt is already available and is bringing about speed, reliability and innovation on new levels today.
